BIOMEDICAL COMMUNICATION CENTER
On the 29th September 1976, the title: Biomedical Communication Center of the faculty of Medicine was accepted as appropriate since it combines into a single unit the important elements related to Media and technology programmes. These included planning, designing, developing, production and utilization of all types of communication media in support of Medical Education, including teaching and research. The Center is a teaching/research service outfit listed by the NUC in the same schedule and status as the University library and the University press. It had co-operation with the University of Pennsylvania,U.S.A. in the area of staff development and training.
Objective of the center
The Overall objective of the centre include:-
1. Adequate teaching and research endeavours of the College of Medicine and University of Ibadan
2. Dissemination of information - Seminars, Workshops, Film show, Health
Resource
materials, e.t.c.
3. Electronic equipment servicing.
4. Teaching and training of students and staff
Other activities which lead to the realisation of the above objective include:-
* Consultation with the relevant College staff and Administration identifying teaching and reseach needs
* Assisting in determining resources that can be made avaliable for the instructional programmes.
* Assisting in the development of instructional formats for each department when needed.
* Identifying, designing and developing required specific instructional materials.
The Centre has five functional units and an administrative
office.
AUDIO-VISUAL
¨This unit provides audio-visual service to all College Of Medicine
Deprtments,
University College Hospital and some Departments of the University Of Ibadan
and
corporate institution in the country .
¨The Provision of some Public facilities for all lectures and social engagements is available.
¨Provision of Slides Projection Services.
¨ Provision of Overhead and Epidiascope Projection Services.
¨Audio-recording of Lectures and Seminars
¨Provision of 16mm Film (Movies) and Film Strip Projection Services
¨Provision of Audio-dubbing (Audio - Fast Duplication) and video projection services
This unit also service the activities of most Pharmaceutical and Industrial
Outfits during
International and Local Workshops and Training. The unit also trains staff
for other institutions in Audio visual technology.
MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING UNIT
This unit provides professional advice and repairs to clients inside and
outside the University
communities. These include, items like Video sets, Television sets, radio
Cassettes, Car Radio
Installation of closed circuit TV system, Video-Camera repairs and servicing,
etc. The volume of
repairs and maintenance jobs by the unit for clients is enormous annually.
Our tools remain in good
condition all the year round, bringing cure to many abandoned electronic sets
at very minimal
charges.
MEDICAL ILLUSTRATION AND GRAPHICS UNIT
The function of Medical illustration Unit is purely Medical Graphic Arts
and illustration provides the
College of Medicine with a complete graphic arts program. The program
includes Consultation,
designing, layout and finished work - in the preparation of the following:
-
CHARTS, GRAPHICS, EXHIBITS, BULLETIN BOARDS, ILLUSTRATIONS, BROCHURES,
LETTERING,
TRANSPARENCIES, MOUNTING, TITLES AND CREDITS, LAYOUT AND SIGNS.
As an additional services; the Graphic Art Personnel (Medical
Illustrators) will assist in the
arrangement for outside contracts where the internal capabilities are limited
if the work schedule
prohibits the completion of the project within the time.
Graphic Art Work: the preparation of original artwork is confined to the following categories;
· Signs
· Charts (Medical and Non-Medical)
· Diagrams (Medical and Non-Medical)
· Posters (Medical and Non-Medical)
· Displays(Medical and Non-Medical)
· Tracings for transparencies
· Exhibits(Medical and Non-Medical)
Mounting:
· Dry mounting on Illustration Board.
· Wet mounting on Illustration Board.
Non Clinical Creative Art Work or Commercial Nature:
· Cover Design
· Colour Separation
· Calendar Design
· Greeting Card
· Creative Writing (Marriage proposal)
· Ordinary Lettering
· Lettering on Certificate
· Photocopying
· Typesetting
The units services are extended to clients in private industrial and corporate settings at minimal cost. Or staff in this unit are highly specialized in varied areas of creative and visual arts.
MEDICAL PHOTOGRAPHY UNIT
This unit is one of the oldest in the department and handles a lot of jobs
essentially medical
science oriented. These include such areas as:
· Surgical Photography.
· Preventive and Social Medicine Photography.
· Clinical and Theatre Photography.
· Conventional Photography jobs in monochrome (Black/White), and
colour.
· Special ENT Photography demands.
· Special clinical photography in Dentistry
TELEVISION PRODUCTION UNIT
The unit is specialized in the production and packaging of Medical films
and Health related
programmes both teaching and electronic media consumption. Its main
objectivesis the
promotion of education, information and communication in the Health and
medical fields.
The unit undertaking the production of :
* Video documentaries
* Production of films and programs in various fields
* Recordings and packaging Surgeries for teaching
* Production of Radio/TV Jingles
* Teaching and Training of staff
* Consultancy in Health and Media related matters.
* We acquire medical films and video for teaching and research.
* Production of teaching Aids.
ACADEMIC CURRICULUM
The award of Diploma Certificate in Biomedical Communication Technology is
proposed
and will take off in the year 2000. We wiil offer courses in the different
aspects of Medical
illustration,video/Film production in health education, Medical photography
and Audio-
visual Technology. The duration of the course will be four Semesters.
We hope to draw our students both from Nigeria and foreign countries for the
academic
program which will be managed by highly skilled and professional staff.
