Prof. Akinyinka O. Omigbodun


The Provost

Professor Akinyinka Omigbodun had his early education at All Saints’ School, Osogbo and Loyola College, Ibadan. He matriculated at the University of Ibadan in 1974 and graduated with distinction from the Medical School in June 1980. He was awarded several prizes for his brilliant performance during his undergraduate training including the May & Baker Prize for the best overall performance at the first professional examination at the University of Ibadan Medical School in 1977 and the Adeola Odutola Travelling Fellowship for Students in 1979. He also won many accolades during his postgraduate professional training at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin and the University College Hospital Ibadan, including those for the best performance at the Part I Final Fellowship Examinations of both the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 1986. He is a Fellow of both Colleges and had further postgraduate training at the University Hospital of South Manchester, United Kingdom and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, USA.

 

He has been the recipient of several merit-based scholarships and fellowship awards including the International Women’s Health Coalition Training Fellowship in Colposcopy & Management of Cervical Pathology in 1990 and the Audrey Meyer Mars Clinical Oncology Fellowship of the American Cancer Society, 1992. He was awarded the American Society of Reproductive Medicine Prize for Distinct Contribution to Science for the Best Poster Presentation at the 52nd Annual Meeting held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, November 1996.

 

Between 1992 and 1993, he was the Chairman of the Oyo State Branch of the NMA. He served as the Secretary of the Faculty Board of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, West African College of Surgeons between 1999 and 2003 and he was the Faculty Chairman & Chief Examiner in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the West African College of Surgeons between January 2003 and January 2007. On 1st August 2006, he assumed duties as the 8th Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. He is a member of Council of the West African College of Surgeons and of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the body that regulates professional medical and dental practice in Nigeria. He has been the Chief Co-ordinator of Courses for the West African College of Surgeons since 2002. He is also the Co-ordinator of the West African Network for Biomedical Education. He was appointed the Chairman of the Board of Management of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) in June 2010.
