CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT THE INSTITUTE

The Institute has Eleven Units headed by academics of repute in various disciplines. The details of the activities of each Unit are as follows:

   1.   MEDICAL GENETIC RESEARCH UNIT (MGRU)        

HEAD OF UNIT     -       PROFESSOR ADEYINKA G. FALUSI

The activities of the Unit include: 

(i)            Population genetics of sickle cell disease,   the thalassaemias and other factors, which modify the pathology of these diseases.

(ii)           Identification of genetic factors modifying the incidence and prognosis of Hypertension, Pre-eclampsia/Eclampsia and Diabetes.

(iii)          Molecular Epidemiology of the genetic markers, which affect the prognosis resistance and treatment of malaria.

(iv)           Molecular markers of resistance to chloroquine (Pfrudr 1 and Pfcrt genes) and sulphadoxine Pyrimethamine (DHFR and DHFR genes).

(v)           invivo and invitro evaluation of antimalaria drug sensitivity

(vi)          Antimalaria drug disposition and Kenetics.

(vii)         Awareness programme of Education, Genetic counseling and diagnosis of the haemoglobinopathies in Nigerians.

These activities are carried out in collaboration with other departments such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Institute of Child Health and other Institutions such as Institute        for Tropical Medicine, Berlin.

       2.       MALARIA RESEARCH UNIT (MRU)

HEAD OF UNIT     -      PROFESSOR A.M.J. ODUOLA

The Malaria Research Unit expanded into a larger malaria research group and has its area    of Research focus:

Studies on Pharmacological and Clinical Efficacy of antimalarial Drugs.

Basic Laboratory Research on Chemotherapy, Parasitology and Biology of Malaria Parasites.

Application of Social Sciences in Tropical Disease Control.

These activities are carried out in collaboration with other departments viz. Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Zoology, Preventive and Social Medicine and other Research Institutes in Nigeria and in the United States of America, Malaysia and Ghana.

The WHO/TDR sponsored linkage programme is coordinated by this Unit in collaboration with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) Yaba, Lagos and the University of Nigeria, Enugu. The Satelife Corporation of the United States and WHO/TDR provide Technical Assistance for communication among the linkage institutions.

 <!- 3        HEALTH AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH AND TRAINING UNIT (H&ISRTU)

HEAD OF UNIT         -         PROFESSOR A. O. ODEJIDE (ADJUNCT STAFF)

This is a multi-disciplinary group consisting of health workers, biostatisticians, policy makers and social scientists.

The activities of the Unit include:

(i)         Development of Disability Assessment Scheme (WHO DAS II).

(ii)        International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps (ICIDH).

(iii)       Rapid Assessment of the operations of Primary Health Care System in Nigeria.

(iv)           National Survey of Substance Abuse behaviour among children and young adults in collaboration with ATRC Incorporation, Maryland, and USA a branch    of Awele Foundation, Nigeria.

(v)            Life skills education in collaboration with the International Centre for Alcohol Policy (ICAP) USA.

   4.   ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH RESEARCH AND     SERVICE UNIT (EHRSU)

HEAD OF UNIT        -     PROFESSOR M.K.C. SRIDHAR

Various projects which the Unit has focused on include:

(i)                  Training of Nigerian and International Postgraduate Students for Research in Environmental Health, Toxicology and Environmental Epidemiology.

(ii)           Organizing workshops and short courses on Environmental Health,   Hazardous and Biomedical Wastes.

(iii)           Research/services on water quality, waste characterization, EIA, EA Waste Management and recycling UNICEF and NGOs are (recycling) collaborating in these activities.

5.   EPIDEMIOLOGY & BIOSTATISTICAL RESEARCH AND SERVICES UNIT (EBRSU)

HEAD OF UNIT       -       PROFESSOR E .A.  BAMGBOYE   (ADJUNCT STAFF)

(i)             Provides training programmes to help capacity building in research methodology, epidemiology, biostatistics and computing in medical sciences.

(ii)           Provides consultancy services to Faculty members on the designs, conduct, analysis and interpretation of data on regular basis.

(iii)           Conducts research (in collaboration with other medical scientists) in development of morbidity and mortality indicators related to prevailing health problems in Nigeria       and evaluation of health programmes.

(iv)           Carries out research on the epidemiology of specific disease of public health impor-tance e.g. AIDS, Asthma and Malaria.

(v)            Conducts the IMRAT Epidemiology and Medical Statistic’s Clinic.

  6.   PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES AND SERVICE UNIT (PSSU)

HEAD OF UNIT      -        DR. EDITH AJAIYEOBA   (ADJUNCT STAFF)

The Unit with the cooperation of the Faculty of Pharmacy is involved in the:

(i)           Establishment of standard Ethno-medical Herbarium.

(ii)           Extraction, isolation and development of pure compounds having anti-microbial,        anti-tumor, anti-malaria and anti-viral properties from plants.

(iii)       Formulation of active compounds into dosage forms.

The Unit collaborates with donor agencies both nationally and internationally.

7.    CANCER RESEARCH AND SERVICES UNIT (CRSU)

          

 HEAD OF UNIT    -       PROFESSOR BOLA O.A... OSIFO (ADJUNCT STAFF)

This Unit handles two separate Federal Government sponsored projects:

(i)            Cancer Screening Project
This project is involved in diagnosis, monitoring and screening for various types of cancers in our environment.

(ii)            Neonatal Hypothyroidism Screening Project
This project is set out to screen neonates for hypothyroidism. The two projects     receive financial support from the Federal Government of Nigeria while reagents and equipment are supplied by the International Atomic Energy in
Vienna, Austria

            8.   BEHAVIOURAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH UNIT (BSSRU)

The Unit is responsible for research on behavioural socio-cultural and economic aspects of health and diseases including – Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Tuberculosis & other poverty related disease, population studies, socio-pathological conditions, geriatric diseases and malaria.

These activities are carried out with various Faculties in the University and research from other institutions.

Mission: Our mission is to upgrade the UI/UCH Joint Ethical Committee to the UI/UCH Ethical Reviews Committee of an International standard.

Goals

(i)                 To set up an appropriate Ethical Reviews Committee comprising of Health  and legal professionals from diverse specialties and laymen capable of dealing with the complex, numerous collaborative proposals which are sent in for approval.

(ii)               To register the members of the UI/UCH Reviews Board with the International Review Board.

(iii)             To register the UI/UCH Review Board with the Federal Wide Assurance.

(iv)              To source funding – locally and internationally for the establishment of and maintenance an adequate secretariat.

(v)                To commence a Training Programme for:

                (a)                All members of newly constituted Reviews Board

                (b)                 Principal Investigators submitting a proposal for Human Subjects Projects.

                (c)               Researchers in the University of Ibadan.

                (d)               Researchers from other allied tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

To a large extent these goals are currently being met. Training Workshops are regularly organized by the IRB. For example the IRB with APIN jointly organized the Bioethics Workshop on Health Research from August 27thSeptember 1st 2003. IRB also jointly organized with Falk Clinical Cancer Trust, the Workshop on Conflict of Interest in Biomedical Research -   January 8th 2004.

 

         10  BIOETHICS RESEARCH UNIT (BRU)   

 

 HEAD - PROF. ADEYINKA G. FALUSI

Bioethics Research Unit is a new unit with the Objectives to:

(i)                 Develop a curriculum for a Certificate Course in Bioethics.

(ii)               Develop Postgraduate Diploma Course in Bioethics.

(iii)             Incorporate a Bioethics programme into the GES curriculum for undergraduates at University of Ibadan.

(iv)              Organise Research on topical issues in Bioethics in Nigeria.

(v)                Organise National/International quarterly Seminars in specific Disciplines of Bioethics such as HIV/AIDS, Cancer, Malaria, Genome Studies and Social Science issues.

(vi)              Develop training modules for Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) Chairman and members in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions and  Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

(vii)            Source funding for Bioethics Research from International Organisations and Funding Agencies.

To facilitate these programmes a Core of Bioethics Staff consisting of     multidisciplinary team is in place. These are from the Clinical Sciences, Law, Social Sciences, Nursing and Biostatistics reflecting the coordinated activities involved in the use of human subjects in Biomedical research.  Our external members, National and International are also available. Pioneers in the Unit include:

Members from other disciplines will gradually be incorporated into the Unit as appropriate.

A library of Bioethics is already coming on board for the programme.

The programme will enhance capacity building in Bioethics as it develops the human skills with effective utilization of professional resources and technical expertise in the use of human subjects in patient care and research at the University of Ibadan and also in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions in general.

 

11.  AFRICAN JOURNAL OF MEDICINE AND MEDICAL SCIENCES

The African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences (AJMMS) came into existence in 1970 with its first publication in 1971.  The founding editor was Professor A Olufemi Williams. The Journal is jointly owned and published by the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Ibadan and the University College Hospital, (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria. Its Secretariat is located in the Institute for Advance Medical Research and Training (IAMRAT), College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria.

AJMMS is published quarterly; four issues form one volume.  It publishes expertly reviewed articles in medicine and medical sciences with particular emphasis on health problem peculiar to Africa.  Manuscripts are received for publication not only in Nigeria, but also from African countries, as well as Asia, Europe and North America.  Likewise, the journal enjoys a wide spectrum of readership from all over time world.Apart from quarterly publications of the Journal, AJMMS had published a supplementary edition on Malaria. Presently, efforts are on towards publishing another Supplementary issue on HIV/AIDS as well as a book on Hypertension.

Recently, the Journal received a financial support to publish an edition of the Journal from Publication of Learned Journals Fund of the Postgraduate School of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan.

             5.  NOTEABLE EVENTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

 §  IMRAT – Malaria Unit was recognized by UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) for its excellent work on malaria. The Unit was cited in the TDR brochure of Research Capacity building in developing countries in the year 2003.Malaria Research headed by Prof. M.J. Oduola has currently been designated one of the five African centres to participate in the WHO MIM/TDR anti-malaria drug resistance network in the year 2002.   (Sponsorship is from the task force on malaria research on Anti-malaria drugs in Africa).

          8.   RESARCH GRANTS RECEIVED

  •        TDR Research Grant for Molecular Studies in Chloroquine resistance in malaria parasite worth $30,000 received – Dr. O. G. Ademowo of the Molecular Genetic Research Unit in 2002.

§          WHO/TDR antimalarial drug resistance network project. Sponsored by WHO/TDR.            

§          Epidemiology of Congenital malaria.                                 Sponsored by ARCH/SAID.

§          Molecular epidemiology of drug resistance malaria and tuberculosis. Sponsored by International Agency for Atomic Energy.                  Antimalarial Drug Therapeutic Efficacy Tests sponsored by WHO/Federal Ministry of Health.

  • §         MIM Research Grant for Home Management, International and Phytomedicine of malaria with $90,000 Annual Grant received in the year 2002 – Prof. J. D. Adeniyi, Prof. O. Oladepo and Dr. E. Ajaiyeoba.

§          

  •            EMSEH Masters Programme:   Masters Programme in Biostatistics and Epidemiology received a support from the Human Reproductive Programme of the WHO with an -  annual subvention of $50,000. Studies from the African region – Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Cameroon, etc. are trained in the programme   -   E.A.Bamgboye  -  IMRAT Adjunct Staff.

9.         BENEFACTIONS

  •            European Commission (INCO) – Dev.) donation of Laboratory Equipment worth a total of $40,000 was received in May 2001 by Dr. O. G. Ademowo of the Genetic Research Unit of the Institute.
  •              Falk Cancer Trust of the United State of America donated a sum of $20,000 through Professor Adeyinka G. Falusi – Director of IMRAT and Chairperson of UI/UCH Institutional Review Board as “Seed Grant” for setting up a Secretariat of an international standard at the Institute   for Advanced Medical Research and Training for the UI/UCH Institutional Review Committee 2002/2003.
  •          A Second year donation of $55,000 from Falk Cancer Trust for the UI/UCH IRC, a Cancer and an Ethics Research Workshop to be organized by the College of Medicine through the Chairperson UI/UCH IRC – Professor Adeyinka G. Falusi for the period of 2003-2004.
  •          Alexander von Humboldt Foundation donation of Equipment worth 45,000 EUROS was received in October 2002 by Dr. O. G. Ademowo of the Genetic Research Unit of the Institute.

          10.  FUTURE GOALS        

The plan is to strengthen and expand our objectives and activities to enable the Institute attain its expected position as a National centre for research and training in the country.

The future goals are:

(a)       Strengthening of manpower development which includes training of research investigators, students at postgraduate level and health professionals from all parts of the country.

(b)       Serving as the research-coordinating centre for tertiary institutions and government parastatals throughout the country.

(c)       Collating and dissemination of research findings through appropriate media to implementing bodies such as industries, private sector, policy makers and the general public.

(d)       To continue to collaborate and link other research scientist with national and international funding agencies.
